Very much enjoyed your site. My mother's family came from Vik and Gulen parish, as did most of the founders of our church in Boone County, Illinois. I was able to visit Vik and the area in both 1987 and 1989. The wonderful pictures brought back great memories. Keep up the good work.

I recently became interested in researching my family's heritage and a google search brought me here. My last name is Honsey but was changed from Honsi when my great great grandfather immigrated.....would that mean we are from the same family???
Comment: Hi Todd, that may very well be! What is certain is that your great great grandfather came from one of the Hønsi farms. There are currently four families with that name, and at the time of the emigrations there were more. What was his name?

Bruk da heller arealet under kurven.

Vik is beautiful. Last year I was fortunate enough to meet my Brekke cousins. They were charming and welcoming.
My Vik family emigrated to the USA through necessity. They became farmers in Iowa and North Dakota.
I was lucky to pick carrots and potatoes from the Brekke farm in Vik. That made me feel as if I belonged. I hope to return soon

Thank you for this site. I've been trying to find ancestry on my Grandmother, Anna C Wiik born May 24, 1888. I know she had Twelve siblings. That's all I know about her. Any information would be appreciated. I think she is from Vik. She came to Ellis Island all by herself. Love your site.
Comment: Thanks Mary! I can't see any Anna born on that date in Vik. Actually, given that her last name is Wiik, it is likely that she is born of a farm called Vik, rather than the town Vik. People from here mostly took their names from the farms. I recommend that you do a search on www.digitalarkivet.no.

Greetings to "Family" and new Friends,
The barn on the homestead of Anfinn and Malina Aase has been remodeled into the BarnAgain Lodge that accommodates 15 guests. Anfinn and Maline sailed from Aase and Otterskreda(Arnafjord) in 1870 on the Gazelle with daughters, Synneva and Sitona and son, Johan. Synneva or Susan was almost ten at the time and her family encouraged her to write about the trip. You may have heard of it. It is called "Grandma's Story" and after my aunt translated it from Norwegian to English, it was retranslated back into Norwegian.
I am writing a story about this family for a television program called Restoration Wild which will be on Animal Planet in late 2016. They are remodeling the basement of the barn and the silo to add more room for guests. Since my immediate family now lives in four different states, we have had wonderful times gathering there especially at Christmastime.
We visited Norway in 2008 and were able to find the farms that the Aase's immigrated from. Torsten, you sounded like you might be interested in this history. I would love to hear from you.

Wonderful page on farms, Torsten! My sixth great grandfather was Kjell Ivarson Honsi, who owned Hinsi farm #1. Beautiful photos. I must visit.
Comment: Thanks Phil! Kjell is also my direct ancestor.

Thank you for this great web site! My Wangsness family lived on the Rislag Farm before 1808 when they left to live in Vangsnes. They then emigrated to America in 1856. I believe the family came from many other area farms as well since we find such last names as Fosse and others. Your photos and information have enriched our family's understanding of the history of the area and the location of the farms.
Comment: You're welcome Sandy!
