Hopperstad (truleg av elvenamnet Hopra, utyda) er ein av dei gamle rike gardane i Vik, som stavkyrkja vitnar om. I motsetnad til Hove er det ikkje rike gravfunn på Hopperstad frå tidi før vikingtidi, og sjølve namnet tyder og på at garden ikkje er eldre enn vikingtid. Under Hopperstad-gardane var det fleire husmannsplassar, som på Hatlekolane og på Breidi (amerikafararar herfrå kalte seg Brien). Hopperstad-gardane har heimestølar på Nyastøl, og fjellstølen som opphavleg høyrde til garden var Liasete.

Hopperstad (probably from the river Hopra) was one of the rich farms in Vik in the middle age, as we can see from the stave church. In opposition to Hove there are found no rich burial mounds at Hopperstad from the times prior to the viking age, and the name itself dates Hopperstad to the viking age. At Hopperstad there were several cotters' farms, as at Hatlekolane and at Breidi. People from Breidi emigrated to the US and called themselves Brien. The Hopperstad farms have their spring farms at Nyastøl, and the summer farm originally used by Hopperstad was Liasete.
